![]() Collaboration is something that is widely used throughout the education field. Collaboration takes place most commonly between students, with peer to peer collaboration, and between teachers for planning. Another opportunity for collaboration is between the administration and teachers. Collaborative LearningThere are so many ways for students to collaborate. With the age of technology among us, we have the ability to promote more active collaborations that can occur beyond the classroom. The purpose of the collaboration is to give students the opportunity to work together, to develop their interpersonal skills, to become self-aware and to develop their awareness of others. There are endless possibilities. As a teacher, you must decide what technology is available and what the learner needs to take away from the collaboration. Collaboration promotes the building of peer relationships and fosters peer interactions. It allows our students to have discussion that gives them insight on different perspectives. Collaborative PlanningCollaboration is a powerful tool to improve teaching and learning. Intentional teacher collaboration creates a strong professional culture and allows effective teaching to spread across all classrooms. My school requires collaborative planning with your grade level and content area at least twice a week. During these collaborative planning hours we work together to improve student achievement and engagement. Understanding by Design (UbD) is the framework we use school-wide to achieve these goals. As a content area team we collaborate to set criteria in place across grade levels that aid students to successfully master their standards and achieve their goals. Grade level teams ensure that we are implementing literacy across all content areas. One of our school-wide goals is improving literacy instruction so this is an area we are continuously finding avenues to collaborate. With time, teachers will develop collaborative teams that will share goals, engage in mutually beneficial professional learning, use communal resources to increase student achievement, and advance their own skills, knowledge, and beliefs related to student learning. The more people devoted to a student’s education, the more likely that student is to become successful. Click here for more information on collaborative planning.
