What is digital citizenship? If you're like me, you have no clue what digital citizenship is! However, after watching this introductory video, I was able to get a much better insight on what digital citizenship truly is. In the education field, digital citizenship aids teachers, technology leaders and parents in understanding what students should know as it pertains to using technology appropriately. It truly prepares students for integration of technology in the classrooms. The nine themes of digital citizenship are: digital access, digital etiquette, digital commerce, digital rights and responsibilities, digital literacy, digital law, digital communication, digital health and wellness, and digital security. Educators have already begun to teach students about digital literacy. However, we must focus on teaching our students and staff members how to be responsible digital citizens before we teach digital literacy. When we help students develop healthy practices on the Internet, we’re also creating a better space for everyone they interact with. If your students use technology in class, digital citizenship curriculum will help everyone make the most of their time online. Students will always have technology and digital access, so why not explain their rights and responsibilities? In this digital era there has been a rise in cyberbullying and cyberstalking, as an educator, this disturbs me because this is another form of stranger danger that I have to educate my students about. I have seen firsthand, with an immediate family member, how not being properly educated in how to handle these things can have a devastating effect. There are so many benefits of teaching digital citizenship. It is essential to helping students achieve and understand digital literacy, as well as ensuring cyberbully prevention, online safety, digital responsibility, and digital health & wellness. The primary reason that makes digital citizenship important is that it allows students to nurture the concepts anywhere and anytime they like. As digital citizens, students engagement levels increase, not only with their peers but with the facilitator as well. As a part of the digital community, students learning is more efficient. It also allows the teacher, through the use of technology, to create customized lectures and adopt new technology related techniques to build on the basic concepts of the student and enhance their learning. Teaching digital literacy and other citizenship skills can also help bridge digital equity gaps between students. As students become good digital citizens, they will use the Internet with a greater sense of self-awareness and better understand how to best use technology. REFERENCES & RESOURCES
