When I was in secondary school, during the 90's, it was rare that a student had a cell phone and actually they were so over-sized they would have been more of a distraction in the classroom. However, in today's society, there is technology all throughout the classrooms. Teachers have found a way to integrate mobile devices all throughout lesson instruction. Prior to Covid-19, I was very intentional about including technology in my daily lessons. Outside of the classroom, many students can be found with their heads buried in their phones. So naturally, I wanted to find ways to engage my students through something that they interact with daily, technology. I think that allowing mobile devices in the classroom can be a great idea. Any time students have access to technology they must be trained thoroughly on what it means to be a good digital citizen. This instruction on digital citizenship should continue through the completion of secondary school. My school is 1:1 technology with Chromebooks. These are considered mobile devices in our school because each student is assigned a device unique to their student identification number. Let it also be known, cell phones are not allowed on the campus. Students must turn them into the office before walking on the campus grounds. In regards to the Chromebooks, our students complete at least one classroom assignment or activity on their Chromebooks daily. With the implementation of distance learning, due to Covid-19, the use of technology in education has skyrocketed. The need for technology-based learning went from moderate to an immediate necessity in a matter of days. I am definitely in favor of mobile devices being used in the classroom, however, it should be something that is issued by the school. Our devices have restrictions based on our parish Digital Technology Policy. This ensures that our students, staff and servers remain protected. There are several reasons I do not feel students should be allowed to use their actual personal mobile devices in the classroom. All students will not have access to cell phones and you don’t want to allow students to share devices. Students can gain access to sites that would otherwise be restricted on campus. We want to provide a distraction free learning environment and cell phones will eventually present a distraction. So yes, I am in agreement that school issued mobile devices should be utilized in the classroom. Subscribe here to get more content like this!
